Overview
Africa is at a pivotal moment where climate resilience and low-carbon growth are no longer optional, but essential for long-term financial stability and economic resilience. For pension funds, insurers, banks, asset managers, global investors, and development partners, the key question is how to mobilize and deploy capital effectively across renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, green transport, water systems, and the blue economy.
The South Africa Sustainable Finance Intensive (SASFI) examines the evolution of thematic financial instruments for climate transition and adaptation. Now in its fifth year, the programme showcases proven transactions and high-impact de-risking structures. By drawing on pan-African lessons, SASFI identifies actionable pathways to accelerate institutional capital toward a lower-carbon, socially inclusive, and resilient South African economy.
Despite meaningful progress, the market continues to face a distinct set of structural constraints: an evolving green finance taxonomy, uneven climate-risk disclosure practices, limited integration of physical climate risk into credit and investment models, and a transition finance architecture that is still underdeveloped for the country’s most climate-exposed sectors. These are not awareness gaps. They are bankability constraints.
