Resilience Amid Uncertainty

Investments that incorporate systems-level factors can ensure the creation of resilient value and generate long-term risk-adjusted returns. Despite the recognition by asset owners, asset managers, and portfolio companies of the potential for generating value through sustainability, gaps still exist in knowledge and implementation. The SASFI 2024, themed “Resilience Amid Uncertainty,” SASFI will explore the role of sustainable and climate finance in driving system-level value creation.  Join me as we examine practical ways for businesses to internalize ESG and sustainability. As well as discuss the practical implications of climate-related risks for insurers, sovereign and pension funds.

Climate-related financial risk

Climate-related financial risk

As guidelines for managing financial risks related to climate and the environment are implemented across Africa and other regions, banks are exploring the obstacles they face in implementing such frameworks in their strategies and operations. At the same time, they are trying to assist their customers and communities in navigating the complex and rapidly changing market dynamics in this area. How can financial professionals develop risk management frameworks and capabilities to identify, measure, monitor, and control those risks?
ASFI_SASFI_Harnessing voluntary carbon markets

Harnessing voluntary carbon markets

Africa faces an urgent need to tailor carbon markets to its advantage, with active participation from the private sector. As interest in voluntary carbon-emission credits grows, it becomes crucial to explore how Africa can harness carbon markets to promote economic development and global climate action. Which practical projects or initiatives can showcase how voluntary carbon markets could aid Africa’s energy transition and the commercialization of its natural resources? What new initiatives are speeding up the development of voluntary carbon markets in Africa? Finally, what impact will carbon markets have on African people?
ASFI_SASFI_Scaling Blended Finance Solutions

Scaling Blended Finance Solutions

The most significant value of blended finance transactions is the ability to unlock funding for investments in areas that are not well funded. How can the strategic use of public finance for the mobilization of additional private finance towards sustainable development be scaled across Africa? How can blended finance be used to de-risk investments that are seen as ‘too risky’ for low-risk-seeking investors, or returns are not commensurate with risk for risk-seeking investors?
ASFI_SASFI_Unlocking Nature's Growth Potential

Unlocking Nature's Growth Potential

In what ways can built environments support the regeneration of resources and natural systems, while also promoting socio-economic growth through a circular economy? The built environments workstream aims to raise awareness and promote accessibility of circular economy solutions within the built environment sector, in order to guide all stakeholders towards sustainable and circular decision-making.

As well as financial and strategic investors or government agencies at all levels.

Options for your team or whole company to access.

Despite trillions of dollars being committed to achieving net zero by 2050, sustainable finance is encountering significant obstacles. The market has been disrupted due to geopolitical tensions, uncertain economic outlooks, and higher financing costs. In Africa, sustainable finance is currently experiencing scalability challenges. And although the continent has seen swift growth in green, social, sustainability, and sustainability-linked bonds issuance, sustainable finance in Africa is met with multiple obstacles that hinder its further development.

What pathways can Africa’s sustainable finance market take to address the roadblocks to raising sustainable finance at scale? How can the industry mitigate risk and bolster skills shortages that dampen growth? What mechanisms can be deployed to overcome institutional and market barriers, legal, political and macro-economic hurdles?
