Africa is facing a growing risk of fiscal crisis due to the rising ratio of its interest payments to revenue, which has doubled since the early 2010s. Repaying sovereign debt has become much more expensive, raising concerns about the continent’s ability to service its debt. To address the challenges of debt distress, climate shocks, and environmental degradation, some experts suggest linking African sovereign debt to sustainability. This session examines frameworks for launching and scaling Sustainability-linked Sovereign Debt in Africa.
